A simply amazing record, folks. Just because this genius band chooses to change their style with each release, does not mean they are not putting out tremendous music. Give it a few more listens (i.e. "Exhale The Vile", "Five", "Nothing Left") and I know it'll grow on ya in a great way.

Robb Flynn is clearly influenced by Jonathan Davis on this record actually.

Most people hate this record, as Machine Head makes a play for the mainstream, cutting out almost all of the thrash elements from their sound, replacing them with bouncy nu-metal rhythms, a lot of shouted rap vocals, and a lot of dumbed-down guitar-playing that, like Korn, is more interested in "sounds" than in riffs. This was actually my first exposure to the band, with "From This Day" getting some light, late-night airplay around the time of release that summer. I'd heard their name, and knew lots of people were into them, but just from that song, I didn't see why. "The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears" is the only song from this album they still play live, and it's probably great in the pit, but I doubt if most MH fans would miss it if they were to drop it from the setlist. "Silver" is a cool slow one as well, pretty underrated. But most of the rest just feels like a watered-down version of Machine Head. In hindsight, it's not as terrible as some would make out. I think the album's statu

... stature has grown a bit over the years, as the initial dismay has worn off and people begin to look back more fondly on 1999. Oh yeah, then there's the Police cover—unsalvageable.
