| To hear Tom tell it, The Atlantic is the last installment of a thematic trilogy about some shit going on in his personal life, this time out using an ocean voyage as a metaphor for leaving his wife(?) ... This is the heaviest we've heard from Evergrey in a while, and though it's not as "busy" as the early albums, it's also proggier than we've heard in quite some time. There are some seriously grinding riffs here, like on "Weightless" and "A Secret Atlantis," while songs like "A Silent Arc" and "Departure" throw a lot of different parts at you. As I've mentioned before, Evergrey is the power-prog band for people (like me) who normally hate power-prog. The heaviness of the music and the emotional weight, along with the themes of inner turmoil are a far cry from the typical gnomes-dancing-in-the-forest garbage like Rhapsody or Blind Guardian. Despite the volume, the atmosphere is one of late nights, dim lights, cold wind and hushed voices.

| The album itself is somewhat shorter than the last couple (only nine songs and a short instrumental, and only one song ("A Silent Arc") goes past seven minutes, the album itself right around 54 minutes. I thought the last couple dragged on a bit too long, particularly Hymns For The Broken. Nothing is as simplistic as the stuff on Monday Morning Apocalypse (which I enjoyed, but I know many hated it), but the songs are still fairly easy to engage with. Nothing is as immediate as "Distance" off the last album (my favorite Evergrey song of all time), but highlights are "A Silent Arc," "Weightless," "Currents" and "Departure."

| Also, no piano ballads. There's not a "Closure" or a "Missing You" to be found here, for better or worse.
