The Beatles had their White Album, Metallica had their black album & Megadeth their superior Countdown to Extinction. Countdown went 3x platinum thanks in part to single Symphony of Destruction. I've heard and read where people say that this album was a sellout, but I do not hear that. Producer Max Norman did an excellent job producing this masterwork. Several songs are as fast & aggressive as anything M had done to this point. Despite the cries of sellout this is a phenomenal speed metal album

Awesome release again. Maybe sounds aren´t so pure than in Rust In Peace album, but tunes are stunning. Symphony Of Destruction contains one of the best guitar riffs in Megadeth´s history.

Of course this album was a bit more commercial than the stuff this band recorded on the 80´s but its still a Great Thrash-Heavy Metal disk. Man some songs like "Ashses In Your Mouth" and "Architecture of Aggression" are works of genius

i would never admit i'm a megadeth fan,but this cd is the best one.i just seen the rude awakening dvd and i have to say,i'm impressed.better than when i seen the band w/ korn, flotsam & jetsam,& fear factory at the santa monica civic in 95.al pilliteri is a obvious choice.too bad dave broke it up.way to go yoko!

2ND BEST ONE OUT THERE! LOOK FORWARD TO NEW RELEASE IN SEPTEMBER!

From: Big Papa K Date: July 7, 2004 at 18:30
The first major change in sound, from speed/thrash metal to more of radio friendly Metallica "Black Album" sound. They show they can pull it off with some tracks like "Symphony Of Destruction" and "Skin O My Teeth", but "Sweating Bullets" is a joke. 8/10

perfection in music form

Dentro de ser un disco con intenciones claramente comerciales, no deja de ser una bomba de relojeria. Buenísimo!!

This was my first Megadeth CD and I loved it so much I bought them all. The only thing wrong with it was this opened the door for the weaker albums that were to follow. Gone were the extended instrumental thrash interludes that dominated the early albums. Still, on it's own, this is a thrash classic.

From: Steve Date: September 2, 2004 at 10:16
Honestly, I was a bit dissapointed with this album. The first 5 or so tracks are preety good but then got tiresome and repetitive. Definetely not the successor of Rust in Peace I was looking for, but then again, nothing will proberbly ever beat Rust in Peace.

Last good album of megadeth but not compared with rust in peace, a great album thats all.

Best Megadeth album of the 90's.Peace Sells is the best of the 80's. I think The System Has Failed will be hard to top. I should know,I am the biggest Megadeth fan in the world. I dare sombody to put them down.-RATTLEHEAD

The System Has Failed!!!!

Obviously, megadeth here are trying to follow metallica by going mainstream after the success of metallica. The composition are streamlined and the riffs are more stripped down. But i would not say this album is all that bad. In fact,i think it's better tha rust in peace. Sweating bullets, skin o my teeth and the awesome symphony of destruction are some of megadeth's strongest relase and no wonder it became a huge hit over the world. Then the tunes, production and lyrics are even more solid and

and consistent than rust in peace. Marty friedman as usual are ripping off killer riffs and solo for this album. What i like more about megadeth than metallica is megadeth do more solos and they have a more classic metal sounding. In my opnion, megadeth's second best release after peace sells. Rating:9.5/10

From: Rafo Phoenix Date: April 30, 2005 at 10:37
Este y el Rust in Peace lo mejor del grupo pero nunca me gusto la voz de Dave Mustaine ese para mi fue el punto flojo del grupo despues sin duda un gran grupo

Only two reasons to buy this cd, Symphony Of Destruction and Seating Bullets! Then you'll hear that the whole cd is great!

From: starvin marvin Date: May 15, 2005 at 11:25

This shouldn't be compared to the black album. That was such a shitty album in general. It was slow and way too fucking catchy.

Best album. I was hooked from the first listen. Symphony of Destruction, Skin o' My Teeth, High Speed Dirt and Sweating Bullets are my favourites.

From: pie75 Date: September 7, 2010 at 8:18
this is not as commercial as metallica's black album in fact it it still has the heaviness but better production it's the first megadeth album i ever got and symphony of destruction had me with that thundering riff but i also love skin of my teeth, foreclosure of a dream, sweating bullets, this was my life, countdown and phsycotron they hit their popularity peak with this one for sure

From: Doghouse Reilly Date: November 1, 2014 at 22:25
Here's megadeth's true commercial breakthrough, by all accounts prompted by Mustaine's continued sourgrape-flavored grudge against the newly-minted mainstream superstars in his former band Metallica. So we get a bit less speed, a few more hooks, and a shitload of albums sold. It's still easily recognizable as Megadeth though, thanks partly to Dave's "unique" vocals and guitar style. Production is very stiff-sounding, the band so tight they almost soundd mechanical. "Symphony Of Destruction" was huge in the summer of '92 and remains the album's best song. Other favorites are "Skin O' My Teeth," "Sweating Bullets," "High Speed Dirt," and "Ashes In Your Mouth." There are a couple of lackluster songs, including the title track, and the weird "Captive Honour"--really, a song about jail rape? A good disc overall, though I'd put it behind both Rust In Peace and Peace Sells, and possibly Endgame as well.

One of the many successful albums of Mr Mustaine & Co...tracks 1,2,4,8 & 11 are the selected ones in my book of metal.80/100
