Although Rude Awakening was a decent release by the standards of 1996 (not a great year for metal overall), it's hard not to see it as a disappointment following a minor gem like Cleansing. Some of it is due to the general uncatchiness of many songs, something Prong has always been plagued with, even up to today. They've always been iconsistent: when they hit, it's out of the park, but you have to wade through some pretty bland fare to get to the good stuff. The other problem with Rude Awakening is the production. This sounds like dance music with heavy, baritone guitars. THe drums and bass are processed to hell and back. The drums sound like a cheap synthesizer, and the bass is distorted into a fart-in-the-bathtub tone. The guitars are still heavy, but the riffs are just boring, and few songs really stand out.
