Just a marvelous, marvelous album! Paradise Lost had been back on track after their turn-of-the-millennium dalliances with goth-rock, and were coming off a succession of pretty damn good albums, but The Plague Within is the best thing they'd done in two decades. You have to figure Nick and Greg's side gigs (with Bloodbath and Vallenfyre, respectively) had something to do with it, as Plague is much heavier than the likes of Tragic Idol, and with much more raw and craggy production. Nick even brings back his death-metal vocals, and somehow they integrate seamlessly with his other voices, mainly his stentorian clean baritone. Doomy highlights are everywhere, including "No Hope In Sight," "An Eternity Of Lies," "Punishment Through Time," "Cry Out" and "Return To The Sun." There's a wide variety of tempos, from the glacial crawl of "Beneath Broken Earth" to the headlong blasting of "Flesh From Bone"—though even that downshifts to a trudge near the end. There's lots of ear candy to feast on

... as well: a little orchestration here, some piano there, female backing vocals over this way, and Greg's signature mournful leads everywhere you turn. The Plague Within was the beginning of a second career peak that continues to this day, even including the unnecessary, but masterfully done, re-recording of Icon.
