First Savatage album without Criss Oliva, released ten months after his untimely death. Replacing him on guitar is none other than Alex Skolnick, who plays impeccably, as always. Handful Of Rain picks up where Edge Of Thorns left off, with even more piano and slower tempos. We get two full-speed rockers this time out, though, in "Taunting Cobras" and "Nothing's Going On." THe title track and "Symmetry" are nice midpaced numbers, and "Alone You Breathe" is a good, emotional ballad, a tribute to Criss. But otherwise ... man, this disc gets boring in the middle, and "Chance" sounds like they're trying to be the next Queen--or more likely, hinting at the development of Trans Siberian Orchestra. Very pompous and overblown in every way imaginable. So yeah, this one is a bit of a letdown, honestly. And it only gets worse with the next couple discs, worrying more about convoluted storylines and bombastic arrangements than on anything else.
