1997 was such a bad year for metal in America that you would be forgiven if this album slipped by you. There was just no mainstream exposure kind of music at that time. Machine Head followed up their '94 debut with this aptly-named sophomore release, and while things have remained more or less the same, the overall songwriting quality has gone down a bit, which Robb Flynn attributes to heavy drinking and drug use. "TenTon Hammer" is an all-time classic from the band, though, with Robb's trademark ringing, chorus-drenched harmonic blaring through the verses like a car alarm, really giving the sense of urgency. Other good tracks include "Take My Scars," "Down to None" and "Blistering." Machine Head were much heavier than the nu-metal that was just beginning to take hold at the time, and had more in common with Pantera and Biohazard than Korn or Coal Chamber. This album is about mid-pack for Machine Head, as it's better ext two releases (or the last one, Catharsis, for that matter), but i

... better than the next two releases, I meant. Fuckin' phone! But not as good as Burn My Eyes or late-period classics like The Blackening or Unto The Locust.
