I got this as soon as it came out, and have been hooked ever since. "Distance" is right away one of my favorite Evergrey songs from any album, with "Passing Through" not far behind. The only drawbacks come as a couple songs in the late going seem to go on too long. Otherwise, Thei Storm Within combines the very best elements of Evergrey's sound: heavy, downtuned guitars (some people accuse the riffsof being too nu-metal and simplistic but I find they add power and force to the songs); effective, not overbearing keyboards; and of course Tom Englund's strong, mournful vocals. He's definitely not the (stereo)typical power-prog metal singer, sounding more like a morbidly depressed David Coverdale at times, or maybe Zak Stevens (the band as a whole has always reminded me somewhat of a very heavy version of '90's Savatage). After the first two tracks, other favorites include "Astray," "The Impossible," "My Allied Ocean," "In Orbit" and "Paradox Of The Flame."
