The popular criticism of Vol. 3 is that Corey Taylor polluted the songwriting with the more mainstream sounds from his other band. And that's a valid complaint: "Vermilion, Pt. 2" is a Stone Sour ballad in the style of "Bother." Several other songs seem more toned-down and straightforward, from a band who built their reputation on being over the top and out of their heads. Or maybe we were all just getting used to them by 2004, as even the more typical Slipknot ragers didn't pack the same shock and awe as earlier songs. It's hard not to see Vol. 3 as somewhat disappointing on the whole. Definitely a better album than All Hope Is Lost, but for me, the self-titled and Iowa are where it's at for this band.
