This may come as a surprise, but Hardwired is actually a pretty good album. Not sure why it's a double CD, as if I'm not mistaken, the total running timeis still under 80 minutes, but it's still about three songs too long. It's similar to the best moments of Death Magnetic, but there are some slower, more methodical plodding tracks as well. The big question is: does it even matter what Metallica does anymore? I mean, after helping invent thrash metal and then pushing its boundaries to the very breaking point on their first four albums, they've subsequently been fallen behind the pack for a quarter century. So while this is an enjoyable listen (but not terribly memorable), it's hard to deny that recent releases by Testament and jExodus, to name a couple, mop the floor with Metallica these days.
