Monster Magnet bounces back after the strangely mellow God Says No. Partly, anyway. Monolithic, Baby!, as the title suggests, tries to bring back the force and boot-to-the-head wallop of Powertrip, so the big, fat power chords are back, and the electronic beats are rolled back. First single "Unbroken (Hotel Baby)" is prime Magnet-style sleaze, Wyndorf channeling his inner Gene Simmons. The first half of the disc is all pretty good, although "Slut Machine" starts things off with an off-kilter beat that you can't stomp to. Things get a little weird in the latter half, with some more bexperimental stuff like "Master Of Light" and "Ultimate Everything," but it all sounds like Monster Magnet. Lyrically, Dave is in fine form, still obsessed with sex and sorcery, but, increasingly, it seems like his lecherous lines are more veiled social commentary (see the title track or "On The Verge"). It's like what you might find if you ate 'shrooms and stared at a porno mag under a blacklight. Really, t

Really, the only thing keeping this disc from rising to near the same level as Powertrip is that the songs aren't as catchy overall. There's no "Crop Circle," "Temple Of Your Dreams," "Tractor" and certainly no "Space Lord." "The Right Stuff" is a Hawkwind song, and "No Way Out Of Here" is also a cover, originally done by someone whose name escapes me at the moment.
