The Last In Line is Dio's attempt to make a carbon copy of Holy Diver. Not only is the sound essentially the same (despite a few less sinister-sounding riffs and melodies), but the pacing is extremely similar as well. Start with a fast, life-affirming rocker, then a slower, majestic title track. Alternate between uptempo and midpaced deep tracks for a while, and jthen drop in "Mystery," this album's blatant rehash of "Rainbow In The Dark," with its similar anthemic quality and lilting keyboard melody. Then finish with a long epic. If anything, there are more faster songs than the previous album, and more major chords and melodies, but otherwise, Holy Diver Part II, and god bless Dio for it. That said, and jI know we all love the guy and what he stood for, and he had good songs sprinkled through the rest of his career, but these first two are really the only essential "Dio band" releases.
