It's interesting to listen back to turn-of-the-millennium "melodic eath metal," still considered fairly extreme in its time by most, and realize just how influential the Gothenburg sound would be on what came after. Bands like Soilwork, Arch Enemy and In Flames were off-limits to a lot of people mostly due to the harsh vocals (especially among more old-school headbangers). But in 2016, songs like "Bastard Chain," "Like The Average Stalker" or "The Analyst" have an almost arena-rock accessibility to them. I mean, I hear songs like these, by bands clearly influenced by melo-death, all the time on Liquid Metal (American satellite-radio channel, for our international friends). In any case, A Predator's Portrait picks up right where In Flames's Clayman leaves off, with the added bonus of Bjorn Strid being a better "clean" singer than Anders Friden. Keyboards are there, but used more as background atmosphere than as a lead instrument. Great disc all around.
