Something of a breakthrough release for Soilwork, as the keyboards are more prominent than ever, and Speed really comes into his own--dude can straight-up sing! At the same time, the riffs are still fast and heavy, the solos blistering, and plenty of aggressive vocals (mostly more of a thrashy shout, but with smatterings of deeper death growls). The guitars have a fuller sound, not as trebly as on earlier albums. Where In Flames really tarnished their legacy by turning into the Gothenburg version of Disturbed or something, Soilwork managed to evolve with their integrity pretty much intact. The band's grasp of English is still unreliable, as a lot of the lyrics are nearly nonsensical; I have no idea what a mercury shadow is, nor a black star deceiver, but they sound cool, dammit! Anyway, to me, Natural Born Chaos is one of Soilwork's best albums, if not THE best, and shows off everything they do.
