Nu-metal was still very young in 1997, and yet Sevendust already distinguished themselves from the pack. Where Korn, Coal Chamber and Snot (arguably the genre's first practitioners) dealt in extremely simplistic andj repetitive riffs and vocals that alternate between muttered verses and screamed choruses, Sevendust were immediately more melodic and musical. The band is still heavy and groovy, but adds more textures, less industrial noises, and singer Lajon Witherspoon actually SINGS. Hell, "Will It Bleed" even has some proggy time-changes in it. Highlights include the singles "Black," "Bitch" and "Too Close To Hate," as well as the mellower "Prayer," "Speak" and "My Ruin."
