Looking back, the absolute hysteria surrounding this album in 1996 just seems ridiculous. It says something about the utter monotony of mainstream hard rock at that time, that Marilyn Manson was able to come along and work people up into such a frenzy. In a way, you can credit him for bringing heavy metal back to a mainstream that had all but abandoned the genre, as much the other it-band of the time, Korn, if not more so. That said, the band, and this album, are both very overrated, with first single "The Beautiful People" being easily the best song here. Manson's imagery and subject matter are mildly interesting, but is only shocking or revolutionary if you're sixteen. The whole thing has some big, sweeping "concept" about the emptiness of pop culture and the people who lap it up, but so what? Most of the songs just aren't good, the band aren't good musicians, and the whole episode is all about the image and shock. This is the only Manson disc anybody needs in 2013, mainly for its hi
