I remember Lamb Of God being lumped in with the metalcore scene at the time, and as far as that goes, I was a much bigger fan of Shadows Fall circa 2003. LOG seems to have held up better over time, though, and more "modern," where Shadows Fall seemed more influenced by '80's thrash. As The Palaces Burn is a big step forward from New American Gospel, the songs seem more focused and tight. The 10th-anniversary remix is highly recommended, with improved sound that rivals the band's later albums. Best songs are "Ruin," "As The Palaces Burn, " '11th Hour," "A Devil In God's Country" and "Vigil."
