After a couple decades of inconsistency, I wasn't expecting anything at all. I mean, I wasn't even interested in new Megadeth music in the runup to Dystopia's release. What a shocker! This is a terrific record! Heavy and riffy (even by Megadeth-in-their-prime standards), you have to give it up to Kiko Loureiro--Dave may be the benign dictator, but the upgrade in guitar tone and riff quality is just undeniable (and Dave heaps praise on Kiko as well). For his part, Dave's voice is a bit lower and rougher, which he attributes to a recent neck surgery. All around, there's just such an infusion of fire and gasoline over Supercollider (what I heard of that record sucked). Dystopia is most definitely a late-career highlight for Megadeth. Lyrically, Dave continues to air his all-consuming, worldwide paranoia, but it's done in a surprisingly palatable way that doesn't tie it to 2016 and make it outdated in five years. Great stuff!
